The Riviera Bulldog® is a recent breed of dog, which appeared around 2010 in the centre of France, thanks to a couple of breeders who wanted to create a hardy bulldog with multiple physical and functional qualities. These two breeders set up a particularly severe selection program, in order to develop a small bull type dog with a balanced and docile temperament, without neglecting the possibility of practicing intense physical activities.
The Riviera Bulldog® is the result of crossing several breeds, including the English Bulldog, the French Bulldog and the Bull Terrier, with the emphasis on the size and stature of each subject added to the programme, as well as on health, and all breeding dogs without exception must be tested before they can be bred. Longevity, athleticism and sportsmanship are the essential criteria outlined in the standard. The only official club was created a few years after the first marriages were approved by the founding registry, an organisation known as RBCF (Riviera Bulldog Club France), to this day, the breed is not recognised by the international cynological federation.
The Riviera Bulldog® is one of the small dogs, this particularly dynamic bulldog has a homogeneous appearance as a whole, its construction is thick and robust, however it must maintain a supple and energetic movement. The height of the withers is approximately equal to the length of the body, so that it fits into a square. His musculature must be developed, but excessive, short and compact, his topline is straight, stocky and strong, associated with a deep and ample chest.
His head is round and massive, nevertheless it must remain proportional to the rest of his body, his eyes are round, brilliant, reflecting his intelligence and his malice, the muzzle is short, but without exaggeration with a well marked stop. The ears are thick, of good width and fall along the jaws or on the front of the skull. The Riviera Bulldog® has a short, smooth, abundant and silky coat, which covers the entire body. All coat colours are permitted by the breed standard except solid blue (without markings) and pure white.
The Riviera Bulldog® has been selected for its physical qualities, but also to become a perfect companion, with a stable, obedient and particularly affectionate character with its owners. Aggressive or difficult to control dogs are banned from breeding, the objective of the breed founder is to develop a robust, dynamic dog that listens to its owners.
