The Bosnian Mountain Horse is a breed of horse originating from Bosnia and Herzegovina, belonging to the cross-border population of small mountain horses of the Balkans. This breed descends from ancient crossings with oriental horses, influenced by the Ottoman Empire, and exhibits traits similar to the Tarpan and Przewalski's horse. At the beginning of the 20th century, Austro-Hungarian authorities took measures to improve the quality of this stock by carefully selecting stallions, aiming to return to an old type of robust pack horse. This selection continued in the stud farms of Yugoslavia.

The Bosnian Mountain Horse has a typical morphology of utilitarian mountain horses from Eastern Europe. It is small but very sturdy, with a great capacity to work in difficult terrains. Its coat is often bay or black, but other colors can also be present. These horses are particularly suited for agricultural work and still serve as a means of transport, whether for carrying loads or for light draft. Their endurance and strength make them valuable animals in rural mountainous areas.

The general health of the Bosnian Mountain Horse is solid. They are resistant to diseases and adapt well to the harsh climatic conditions of their native environment. Their character is generally docile and cooperative, making them reliable companions for farmers and residents of mountainous regions. Their calm temperament and intelligence make training easier, although it is important to use gentle and patient methods to achieve the best results.

In terms of education and training, the Bosnian Mountain Horse learns quickly. Varied exercises are essential to maintain their interest and develop their skills. They are used for both pack work and draft, and their versatility allows them to adapt to different tasks. The training of these horses should include practical exercises that reflect the types of work they will regularly perform.

The measurements of the Bosnian Mountain Horse are relatively modest. Their height at the withers typically ranges between 13 and 15 hands (52 to 60 inches), and their weight ranges between 660 and 880 pounds. These dimensions allow them to navigate mountainous terrain easily while being strong enough to carry heavy loads.

The official equine club representing the breed is often designated by local associations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but there is no centralized studbook for the entire Balkan population. However, these horses are recognized by various national and international equestrian organizations, ensuring their preservation and development. Conservation efforts have been put in place, especially after the significant losses during the Bosnian War, where more than half of the horse population was decimated.

Today, the majority of Bosnian Mountain Horses are found in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a significant number also in Serbia. In 2020, Serbia had about 2,000 individuals of this breed. They are also present in smaller numbers in North Macedonia, Croatia, and Slovenia. Exports to Germany have been made to help preserve this unique breed.
