The Comtois horse is a medium-sized draft horse breed originating from the Franche-Comté region in France. This breed has Germanic and possibly Burgundian origins, and it is particularly prevalent in France and Switzerland. Under the Ancien Régime, the Comtois was highly esteemed and represented a flourishing example of heavy draft horse breeding in France. However, this breed was decimated during the Napoleonic Wars, blending with the future Franches-Montagnes horse in Switzerland under the name "Jura horse." In France, breeding was revived at the beginning of the 20th century.

Primarily selected for field work, the Comtois became a rustic draft horse capable of living outdoors year-round. Initially bay in color, it acquired, after World War II, its distinctive coat with light-colored manes and tails, which contribute to its current success. The Comtois is appreciated for its calm temperament, medium size, and great resilience. Facing competition from tractors, this breed was converted into a meat animal. However, in the 1980s, it became the only French draft breed whose numbers saw a slight increase.
