Overall description of the breed

The Russian Saddle Horse, or Orlov-Rostopchin, is a breed of saddle and sport horses originating from Russia. Its history dates back to the 19th century, born from the fusion of the breeding horses of Counts Orlov and Rostopchin. This breed has experienced a turbulent evolution over the years. At the end of the 19th century, it was highly regarded as a mount for dressage and cavalry. However, World War I almost decimated this population of horses.

Thanks to Semion Boudienny, the breed was restored and took the name "Russian Saddle Horse." Despite an attempt at restoration, the breed almost disappeared again after World War II. From the 1950s, an unofficial recreation began, leading to the birth of the Ukrainian Saddle Horse. Since 1978, Russian breeders have been striving to officially revive the Russian Saddle Horse by crossing it with Trakehners. Despite these efforts, the breed still suffers from a lack of recognition and remains critically endangered.

The modern Russian Saddle Horse is elegant and sporty, often with a black coat. The selection of horses is very strict, with two important evaluations at the ages of two and four years before reproduction is allowed. This rigor is necessary to maintain the quality of the breed, whose numbers remain very low. The breed was exported to the United States in the 1990s, leading to the creation of a breed association in North America.

The collapse of the USSR had mixed effects on the Russian Saddle Horse. The main breeding stud is located in Starojilovski, but the lack of funding from the Russian equestrian federation has hindered the development of the Orlov-Rostopchin. With perestroika, the first exports of horses became possible. However, some of the best horses sold abroad were marketed under the name "Russian Trakehner," with little concern for preserving the specific lines of the breed.

The Russian Saddle Horse often competes with other sport horse breeds, complicating its recognition, even in Russia. In terms of physical characteristics, these horses are generally of medium size, measuring between 15.7 and 16.7 hands at the withers (about 63 to 67 inches), and weighing between 1,100 and 1,320 pounds. They are appreciated for their elegance, developed musculature, and natural aptitude for dressage and show jumping.

The temperament of the Russian Saddle Horse is generally described as docile, intelligent, and energetic. These horses are known for their adaptability and willingness to work, making them excellent partners for competitive riders.

In terms of health, the Russian Saddle Horse is generally robust, but like many sport horse breeds, it can be prone to health problems related to intense physical activity. Special attention is given to their diet, exercise, and veterinary care to maintain their optimal physical condition.
