Overall description of the breed

 The Spanish Jack Russel, or more commonly known as the Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz, is a worthy descendant of the terrier-type dogs of British origin, essentially the Fox-Terrier, known for their reckless temperament and their particularly developed hunting instinct. The latter were imported into southern Spain by English merchants centuries ago, particularly in Andalusia, where they came to buy local products, which were highly valued in Britain. The Spanish Jack Russell is probably a cross between the ancestors of the Fox Terrier and local small dogs, used mainly for hunting pests on Hispanic farms. It is a breed that is not widely distributed outside its native region, and a few breeding programmes were set up in the early 20th century to establish its morphology and breed standard. The first official club dedicated to the Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz was founded in 1993, followed by recognition by the Spanish state and the Real Sociedad Canina de España (translated as the Royal Canine Society of Spain) in the year 2000. This breed is not yet registered by the International Cynological Federation.

The Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz is a small dog, but don't let its size fool you, it is an extremely robust animal with a solid build and exceptional agility. Often referred to as the Spanish Jack Russell, they bear a striking resemblance to their British counterpart, both physically and in terms of their strong character. His body is longer than it is tall, so he fits into a rectangle, his chest is broad, with well sprung ribs, all resting on short, powerful legs. Its structure has been specially selected so that it can squeeze into tight, hard-to-reach burrows. The head is flat, with a slight curve in the central furrow, the muzzle is moderately long and the stop is not very pronounced. The ears are triangular in shape, small, falling nicely towards the front of the head. His tail is of good length, it must be in a low position when the dog is at rest and on the contrary, carried high when he is in period of activity, traditionally cut at three quarters of its length in the countries where the docking is still authorized. The coat is short, thick and abundant, mostly white, often with a tricolour mask (black and tan), with markings on the cheeks and above the eyes.

The Andalusian Terrier is a pleasant, dynamic and very attentive partner in life. It is a reckless dog that does not shy away from danger, like its British ancestors, its courage is matched only by its determination. He will need regular physical activity to feel balanced, his boundless energy must be channelled by frequent and intense stimuli. The Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz is a versatile companion, good at work, gentle and sociable with his family and fellow dogs, tender with children, he particularly enjoys their company. His education is rather easy, obedient and docile by nature, you will not encounter any major difficulty in learning the basic rules, however, his predatory instinct being strongly developed, a positive socialization towards small animals is preferable. He adapts well to the urban environment, but his hyperactive temperament will require a large garden or daily walks. An intelligent and loyal companion, the Spanish Jack Russell is an active life partner who will need attention to thrive, and if you give him time and love, he will repay you a hundredfold.

Adult: The Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz will weigh between 15.4 to 19.8 lbs and his height at the withers will be between 13.7" - 17".
