Overall description of the breed

The Deliboz horse, also known as the Kazakh of Azerbaijan, is an oriental riding horse breed originating from Azerbaijan. Bred primarily in the regions of Qazakh, Agstafa, and Tovuz, the Deliboz has a rich and interesting history. This breed is historically influenced by Persian and Turkmen horses, descending from the ancient Azerbaijani horse breed. The formal recognition of the Deliboz took place in the 1930s and 1940s, during which time the breed was crossed with Arabian and Karabakh riding horses to enhance its characteristics.

The Deliboz is often described under the names Deliboz or Daliboz, with the Russian term Delibozskaya also used. Over its development, the breed has been shaped to become a light riding horse, ideal for racing and riding excursions. In 1943, under the Soviet Union, a breeding cooperative named Gosplemrassadnik was established to improve local horse populations. Since the 1950s, crossings have primarily been done with Arabian and Tersk horses, while the Karabakh has been bred separately.

The Deliboz is a medium-sized horse, generally measuring between 56 and 60 inches (144 to 152 cm) at the withers. Their weight often ranges between 880 and 1100 pounds (400 to 500 kg), giving them a robust yet elegant structure. Deliboz horses have a short head with a broad forehead, a massive body, and a good topline. Their legs are healthy and well-proportioned, with broader cannon bones than those of other horse breeds. The most common coat colors in Deliboz are bay or gray, adding to their distinctive and attractive appearance.

The temperament of the Deliboz is known to be capricious, although these horses are also very intelligent and responsive. Many Deliboz exhibit a natural ambling gait, which makes them unique compared to other breeds. Despite their sometimes unpredictable nature, these horses are highly valued for their endurance and ability to adapt to various conditions.

In terms of health, the Deliboz is generally robust and resilient. The harsh conditions of Azerbaijan have given this breed a solid constitution, resistant to diseases and difficult climatic conditions. Their strong legs and hard hooves make them less prone to injuries and hoof problems, which is a significant advantage for working horses.

The education and training of the Deliboz require a patient and respectful approach, taking into account their intelligence and sometimes capricious nature. With proper training, these horses can excel in various equestrian disciplines, including racing and trail riding. Their lively nature and willingness to learn make them ideal partners for experienced riders.

The official equestrian club representing the Deliboz breed in Azerbaijan is the Association of Horse Breeders of Azerbaijan. This club maintains the official studbook, ensuring the purity and standards of the breed. The Deliboz is recognized by various global equestrian organizations, highlighting its importance and value as a distinct breed.

In summary, the Deliboz is a medium-sized, robust, and elegant horse with a rich history and significant cultural heritage. Its physical characteristics, unique temperament, and resilience make it a valuable breed for many equestrian activities. Thanks to the efforts of breeders and dedicated organizations, the Deliboz continues to thrive and maintain its unique place in the world of oriental riding horses.
