Overall description of the breed

Originating in the Saxony region of Germany and appearing at the end of the 19th century, the Hanover Hound is a cross between bloodhounds and "Haidbracke", an ancient breed of hounds from the German moors which has now disappeared. It was created mainly for hunting wounded big game. It is a powerful and enduring dog, which performs particularly well in bloodhounding and tracking, encouraged by its exceptional sense of smell and its formidable determination at work.

It is the origin of many hunting dog breeds founded in Germany, including its lighter version, the Bavarian Hound. It was recognized by the International Cynological Federation on October 6, 1959, the last update of the official standard in force was published on March 19, 2015.

The Hanover Hound is a powerful hunter with a solid and balanced build and an impressive power to weight ratio. Selected for decades for their stamina, they have all the main characteristics of the perfect racer, their body is slightly longer than it is tall, rectangular in shape, with a long, straight topline and particularly agile, robust legs.

Deep-chested and well-built, the Hanoverian Red is structurally bulky, but retains a fine, tucked-up belly that gives it a dynamic appearance. The musculature is remarkably well developed and vigorous, especially on the front part of the body. The head is broad, massive, with a clearly marked stop and a broad, low muzzle. The tail is long, set high and discreetly curved at the tip. The coat of the Hanover Hound is short, dense and coarse in texture, the standard colour is light to dark deer red, more or less brindle, with or without mask, small white markings on the chest are tolerated.

The temperament of the Hanover Hound is generally gentle and pleasant, especially with family members, whom they love very much. Curious and playful, family games are one of their favourite activities, especially if they are based on tracking or searching for objects. He is a balanced and peaceful dog indoors, but don't be fooled by appearances, he is a tireless walker who can cover miles without the slightest sign of fatigue.
