Overall description of the breed
The English Cocker Spaniel is, as its name suggests, a breed of dog of English origin, and is one of the oldest in the UK. An excellent hunter, it made its first appearance in the 18th century, but its true origins would be much further back, its ancestors would have been imported from Spain by Anglo-Saxon merchants from the 15th century. His name comes from the word "Woodcock", a bird he has tracked to perfection for decades.
It was first registered by the Kennel Club in 1873, which was also the year of the creation of the famous British register, "The Kennel Club". The International Cynological Federation recognised the breed definitively on 10 April 1963 and the latest update of the official standard in force was published on 8 October 2012.
The English Cocker Spaniel is an extremely popular breed of dog, appreciated by many families around the world, especially because of the closeness they acquire with their owners. It is an easy-going and very affectionate companion that does not lack dynamism, despite its nonchalant air, it will follow you everywhere and will surprise you with its endurance. His body is short and compact, his topline is clean, broad and firm, sloping gently towards the tail, combined with a well developed chest and deep chest.
The head is elongated, clearly chiselled, neither too fine nor too heavy, with a rounded skull and a well defined stop, situated halfway between the tip of the nose and the occiput. The coat is medium to long, soft and glossy in texture, the legs are furnished with good length feathering, the colours of the coat permitted by the standard may be self-coloured including black, red, fawn, brown (chocolate), black and tan, brown and tan, no white is permitted, except for a small patch on the chest.
The particolour consists of two categories, the bicolour: black and white, orange and white, brown and white, lemon and white, all with or without spotting. The tricolour: black, white and tan, brown, white and tan or roan with multiple shades such as blue, orange, lemon, brown, blue or brown and tan.
The English Cocker Spaniel has a gentle character and is a particularly demonstrative companion, its feelings towards its owners are characterised by many signs of affection. Of a jovial and cheerful nature, he will appreciate long walks or playful activities with his family, tireless, he will surprise you by his endurance and his resistance to effort.
For his full development and well-being, he must practice regular physical activity to channel his boundless energy, once his needs are met, he is a docile and calm indoor dog. Adult: The English Cocker Spaniel will weigh approximately 12.5 to 14.5 kg (27.5 to 32 lbs), his height at the withers will be approximately 38 to 41 cm (15" to 16.5").
