Overall description of the breed
Originally from Turkey, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a very old breed, whose ancestors included the great hunting dogs of Mesopotamia, renowned for their power and speed.
Once used to guard livestock, they were prized for their ability to deter predators from approaching flocks and for their exceptional stamina. On the vast plains of Turkey, formerly known as Anatolia, the Anatolian Shepherd could cover long distances.
Today, the Kangal, as it is also known, is an excellent working dog. It is still used as a sheepdog in many countries, particularly in Eastern Europe. The FCI officially recognised the breed on 6 June 1989. The most recent update of the official standard was published on 15 June 2018.
Anatolian Shepherd Dogs are powerful and solidly built. They are fairly high on their feet, with strong, robust legs. Their head is massive and fairly long, in proportion to their small eyes. It has a strong neck and stocky shoulders. It combines great strength with remarkable agility, making it a formidable colossus on all fours.
Its tail is set high and its tip is often curved over its back, especially in males. Their colour varies from golden to brown, and their coat can be short or medium-length.
