Overall description of the breed
The American Cocker Spaniel is a direct descendant of the English Cocker Spaniel. It appeared at the end of the 19th century in the United States with the importation of a pregnant English bitch. It is from this litter that a rigorous selection began with the objective of creating the American Cocker Spaniel as we know it today.
This variety was brought to the attention of the Americans and was promoted to the rank of a full breed in the first half of the 20th century, and the first dogs were imported into Europe in the 1950s. Recognized by the International Cynological Federation on January 1, 1965, the last update of the official standard in force was published on July 27, 2021.
Don't be fooled by its small size, the American Cocker Spaniel is a sturdy dog with an iron constitution, balanced and beautifully built, it is the smallest hunting dog in its category. Quick and hard working, American Spaniels are prized for their agility as well as their vigour, their body is short and compact, with a straight, firm back and a chest that is considerably developed for their size, all supported by thick limbs and strong bones.
The head is round, well proportioned as a whole, i.e. in harmony with the rest of the body, it must present an intelligent, alert, gentle and endearing appearance. Its muzzle is short and the stop well marked, its eyes are of great brilliance reflecting its intelligence.
The coat is short, silky, slightly wavy in places and soft to the touch, coupled with a dense undercoat which provides effective protection against adverse weather conditions. It also has long feathering on the lower legs, ears, chest and abdomen.
The character of the American Cocker Spaniel is gentle, balanced, jovial, and a deeply gentle dog that will always show kindness to those around it. Overflowing with energy, he will need to exercise every day to feel good in his paws, if his needs are met, he will adopt a peaceful behaviour indoors.
Playful and intelligent, he will appreciate family activities, especially if they are based on tracking or searching for objects, these simple exercises will allow him to form a strong bond with his owners. It is also a remarkable working dog, too often not exploited, its qualities are numerous, in particular a formidable nose and an exceptional endurance. The American Cocker Spaniel is sociable with his fellow dogs, his stable temperament makes him a wonderful family dog who will fill all the inhabitants of his home with tenderness.
Adult: The American Cocker Spaniel will weigh approximately 12 kg (26.5 lbs), with a maximum height at the withers of 38 cm (15") for males and 35.5 cm (14") for females.
