Overall description of the breed

The origins of the Chinese Crested Dog are extremely old, its presence can be traced back to the 12th century BC. It first appeared in China, where it was present for several hundred years, particularly during the Han dynasty. At the time, it was used mainly for hunting pests on cargo ships. It was then imported into Europe and the United States at the end of the 19th century. Probably the ancestor of the Mexican Naked Dog, it was shown at exhibitions in the 1950s, where it was very successful. It was somewhat neglected afterwards, but it remains quite popular in Europe and more precisely in the United Kingdom. The International Cynological Federation registered the breed definitively on 17 July 1972.

Like its character, its appearance is unique, its hairless body giving it a singular appearance and an endearing side! His morphology is long, his body is quite long, he fits in a rectangle. Balanced and athletic, the Chinese Crested is rather solidly built, with a strong chest and deep belly. The head is well proportioned to the rest of the body, the skull is rounded and the stop moderately marked, revealing almond-shaped eyes. The tail is long, rather thin, set high on the loins, falling along the hock, showing abundant fringes of hair. The bottom of the legs and the head are the only "hairy" places, the rest of the skin is completely naked. All colours of hair are allowed.

With its unusual appearance, the Chinese Crested Dog is one of the small dogs, two types are distinguished in this breed, the "Cobby" type which has a thicker build and the "Deer Type" which is more refined. Sensitive by nature, they are extremely affectionate with their owners, always on the lookout for a caress or attention from their loved ones. Jovial and playful by nature, he willingly participates in activities, because under his nonchalant airs, he is a very active dog, he knows how to be dynamic and obedient. Rather reserved with strangers, he does not trust easily, but once he has adopted you, it is for life! In short, he is an excellent companion dog, close to his masters and his social group in general, he needs the presence of man to feel good in his paws and completely fulfilled.

His weight is 3 to 5 kg (6.5 to 11 lb) and his height is 28 to 33 cm (11 to 13 inch) for the male and 23 to 30 cm (9 to 12 inch) for the female.
