Overall description of the breed

The Bosnian Hound, as its name suggests, comes from Eastern Europe, more precisely from Bosnia. Little is known about its real ancestors, and it was initially called the Illyrian Hound. Created and developed in the 19th century, it is certainly the result of various crosses between local and Italian hunting dogs, and it would seem that the Saint-Hubert breed was introduced into its development to reinforce its hunting qualities. The breed was finally registered by the International Cynological Federation on June 19, 1965 under its original name, but was changed a few years later to Bosnian Wirehaired Hound "Barak". The breed was finally registered by the International Cynological Federation on April 9, 1955, and its current standard was published on January 15, 1973.

Not very widespread outside its native country, this versatile dog is an excellent hunting dog and a remarkable companion dog. Balanced and harmonious, his gait is light and determined, his body is well built, resistant and solid. He has all the characteristics of the perfect hunter, muscular, agile and enduring, his limbs are powerful, his rib cage is deep and ample. All this associated with a straight back line, stocky and broad, rounding off discreetly towards the loins. The head is rather narrow, tapering towards the muzzle, the ears are of medium length and drooping. The coat is long and rough, with a dense and abundant undercoat.

The Bosnian Hound's character is affectionate, very close to its family circle, but it is also an efficient, intelligent and determined hunting dog. Courage and boldness are among its main qualities. An excellent tracker, the Barak is especially appreciated for its formidable scent. He is a devoted teammate, attentive to his environment, lively and always seeking to accomplish his mission in the best possible way. He is a dynamic dog, he will need to exercise every day to feel totally fulfilled and to be able to remain peaceful indoors. An urban environment does not suit him very well, his temperament seems to be better suited to a rural environment. His adult weight will be about 16 to 24 kg (35 to 53 lb) and his height will be between 46 and 58 cm (18" to 23").
