Overall description of the breed

The Serra de Aires Sheepdog, also known as the Portuguese Sheepdog, originated in Portugal, more specifically in the Alentejo region in the south of the country. As great herdsmen, they excel in their field. Probably the result of cross-breeding between local shepherds, it is used by man to drive livestock, whether sheep, cows or horses. Its name comes from the Serra Aires mountains, where the harsh climate forged its extraordinary resistance and great adaptability.

Portuguese Shepherd Dogs are intelligent and close to people. The breed was definitively recognised by the F.C.I. on 16 November 1954, and the most recent update of the official standard was published on 4 November 2008.

These medium-sized dogs are slightly longer than they are tall, robust and stocky, reflecting their solid build. The topline is straight, sloping slightly backwards. Its chest is deep and its limbs are strong and slightly curved at the elbows, giving it an atypical monkey-like movement. This is why the locals call it the "monkey dog" or "cão-macaco".

Its hair is thick, dense and woolly, covering its entire body evenly. It has a broad, massive head with a pronounced stop. Its colour varies between fawn, charcoal fawn, brown, yellow and grey. Its hazel-coloured eyes can vary from light to dark. The tail is thick at the base and tapers towards the tip.

Portuguese Shepherd Dogs have a typical sheepdog character: loyal and protective. They are excellent family and working companions, enjoying playtime and showing great agility and alertness.
