Overall description of the breed

The Picardy Shepherd is a dog with ancient origins, dating back to the 8th century. However, little information is available about the cross-breeding that went into developing its morphology, although it is suspected to be descended from certain Celtic sheepdogs.

The Picardy Sheepdog was first exhibited in 1899. However, it was not until 1955 that the first French organisation dedicated to the breed saw the light of day, thanks to the efforts of renowned dog fancier Robert Montenot. Official recognition by the FCI was granted the same year, on 27 June 1955. After a period of public disinterest between 1920 and 1940, the Berger Picard won back the hearts of dog lovers and remains a popular breed today. The most recent update of the official standard was published on 4 November 2008.

This medium-sized dog is distinguished by its height on the legs. Picardy Sheepdogs have a rustic appearance, but they are graceful in their movements without appearing heavy. They have a deep chest and a straight, broad back. The head is fine, but proportionate to the body. The eyebrows are well developed, but do not hide the eyes, while the muzzle is rather short with an obvious stop.

Their medium-length coat is harsh and hard, and varies in colour from fawn to brindle to charcoal, with no white patches. The tail is a good length, full of hair and must not curve over the back.
